First Black, Female Governor

So a silver lining in the governor's race occurred to me today. Sure, we now have a thief moving into the governor's mansion, but pretty soon, we will see the first female, African-American governor in Florida. That's two milestones in one!

How, you ask? Well, while running mates are pretty much a secret in Florida, Rick Scott chose Jennifer Carroll as his, and she will now be one indictment away from the top office in state politics. Sooner or later, Scott will inevitable be indicted for something, and voila, Gov. Carroll.

I spoke to Carroll a couple times when she was running against Corrine Brown for Congress. Never much because that race was never and will never be winnable for a Republican. She seemed harmless enough. So I won't mind her keeping the seat warm until we can run in a special election in 2012 and show her the door Gerald Ford-style.

Why 2012? Well, a special election will have to happen if Scott leaves before he is midway through his term, and do you really think the indictment will wait that long?

So congratulations, future Gov. Carroll. You laid the groundwork for history yesterday.

  1. A) I doubt we'll see an indictment
    B) It's surprising to see a left-Democrat acknowledge a woman, African-American or Latino who is Republican. Usually scorn or distain is heaped upon them for having the temerity not to be Democrats. In fact some of the most savage vitriol has imaginable has been dished out against Black and Latino Republicans by so-called "Progressive" Democrats (and yes, given their propensity to screw things up, I resent the term "progressive" being usurped). I am a progressive but I am not a Democrat (or Republican, for that matter)

p.s. I always refer to Democrats as 'Democrats' , not as Dumbocrats or Democrooks and find the left-Democrat terminology of Rethugs to be highly offensive. I suspect that the arrogance of the left- Democrats contributed somewhat to their demise yesterday. Left Democrats always contend that people vote against their own best interests when they vote Republican. Perhaps the people know their interests better than the pols or at least know that letting the pols dictate the matter (as did Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao Zhedung) is a giant step toward a complete loss of freedom

  2. Did I refer to them by a bad name in this post? This post really is largely a joke. But if this is too offensive, I find it funny to respond by comparing left Democrats to Hitler and Stalin.

Now, I think people shouldn't hit the ceiling when such comparisons are made. It empowers the opposition. But didn't the right in Central Florida this year go nuts over the audacity of a certain "Taliban Dan" ad?

  3. In fairness, I don't think the right was as irritated by the label as they were by the deceptive justification for applying that label. And, Jake, you've always been a reasonable guy. While you didn't use any offending terms in this post, I'm pretty sure I've seen the term tea baggers on your blog. Let's work to eliminate name calling, because it pulls attention away from the important issues being discussed. You're not convincing anybody to change their views by insulting them.

And why do people always run to Hitler? Surely, in the history of the world, there must have been a few benevolent dictators. I certainly plan to be.

  4. Well, I used to avoid the term teabaggers, but it has become so much a part of the lexicon. I will try and avoid the term in the future. That said, the name is just a term that plays off a self-description of the tea party movement, who I remind started out wearing teabags on hats and the like. I hear terms like socialist thrown around casually these days to describe politicians who do not subscribe to that philosophy at all.

As for dictators, they surely all start out benevolent. But something about totalitarian rule can bring out the worst in a conquerer. But if anyone can pull it off, Tom, I am counting on you.

  5. I apologize if this posts twice, and since I don't remember exactly what I said, allow me to paraphrase myself. Trust me, I was much more eloquent the first time.

Even if the term Teabaggers plays off a self-description, the manner and tone in which it is used makes it no better a description than Repuglicans, Dummycrats, or People Who Dip Their Testicles in Others' Mouths.

Well, it's maybe better than that last one.

Deliberately (or ignorantly) misrepresenting someone's political views by applying the label Socialist is deceitful, and does a disservice to voters, politicians, and Socialists. But at least it is an accepted label for a set of views. (Although that's not an absolute; mislabeling someone a Nazi seems worse than calling them a Teabagger.)

Anyway, I appreciate you making a concious effort to avoid using the term Teabagger (except, as noted, when using it as a euphemism for literal ball-dipping), in the past and in the future. I looked back through the blog, and I only saw one instance, so it's hardly egregious. You're the best informed person I know on politics, local and otherwise, and your blog deserves more attention than it probably gets.

Now that I've buttered you up, I trust that I can count on your support in my campaign for Dear Leader.
